Tar exclusions file is does not exclude /var/logs /var/run /var/lock etc. These should probably be included. However as far as logs go, some caution should be exercised as I have seen failures in the past because this directory has been cleared. - macropin

Shouldn't /var/lib/modules also be excluded, particularly if the host runs a different kernel from the one against which these modules were compiled?
